Best for Carpet

If you have carpeting, select one that scores high for carpet and rug maneuverability and pickup. Many models do a good job of removing dust that has been embedded in carpets with a low pile, and several are capable of picking up heavier debris such as orzo pasta, metal screws and pet hair. However, they can't handle small particles like an upright or canister vacuum and can be unable to pick up dirt in the vicinity of baseboards and thresholds.

The best option for carpeted homes is a two-in-one robot vacuum/mop, which lets you swap in a cleaning bin and a damp mopping pad. It can be set to only mop. We were impressed by its ability to navigate on floors that are not bare as well as rug. The Combo i5 also has a very long run time and great path planning for a device of this size.

If you're looking to buy a high-tech vacuum that is high-tech, the Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1 Robot Vacuum & Mop is a great alternative. It comes with a large charging dock that can last for months without needing to be empty, and it has amazing navigation abilities and auto-emptying on bare floors and carpets. It also comes with a smart mapping system, and can be programmed to only run during certain times (a useful feature for keeping the sly children and animals from running wild). The Shark has less powerful suction than other mop/robot combos however it's still good at picking up hair and pet hair. It is the best value of our top picks.

Robot vacuums are the ideal pick for hardwood floors because they can easily maneuver around obstacles without damaging the floor's surface. A few years back robot vacuums underwent an important change. Manufacturers began to add sensors that allowed them to avoid household items that traditional sensors might become stuck on or run across. The improvements in technology reduced the number of times that our testers were required to clean up after a robot snag.

However, the new sensors haven't solved all of the issues these machines face.
