How to Replace Window Panes

A cracked window pane is an inconvenience. It could be a chance to upgrade to energy-efficient windows or insulated ones to enjoy benefits such as improved comfort, increased resale values and reduced utility costs.

This is a project you could take on yourself for only a fraction of the cost of hiring an expert. You'll need only the appropriate tools and a few hours of your time.

Glass

If your single-pane windows are outdated broken, deteriorating or damaged replacing them with modern glass that is tempered or insulated will increase energy efficiency and decrease noise while maintaining the historic integrity of older homes. Most homeowners with basic hand tools can repair windows with ease. You will also require an extra window pane, glazier's tips, pliers, and latex glaze putty. If you need to, you can use a heating gun to warm the old putty. Wear safety glasses and gloves prior to beginning. Working with broken glass could cause serious injuries.

Begin by removing any remaining broken pieces of glass. It is best to use pliers for this however, a flathead may work as well. After that, use a wood chisel or putty knife to take the remainder of the old putty from around the frame and the sash. Be careful not to break the window sash. Be careful and slow. It is recommended to work using a sturdy ladder rather than the ground and place someone on the sash to help hold it steady.

Make sure the window frame is ready to accommodate the new pane once you have removed the old putty. If you are working on a large-sized window, make sure that it is securely attached to the frame. This task can be made relatively simple and fast with the appropriate tools and techniques.

Once you're ready to begin taking off the old window pane by removing the glazing points made of metal that are connected to it.
